THE MODERN AGE was formed from the remnants of THE GEMS, a successful rock band from Miami, Fla. The GEMS featured lead singer and future movie star Rocky Echevarria (aka Steven Bauer/Scarface/Thief of Hearts), screenwriter and songwriter Jim Petersen (Golddiggers/THE WONDER KIDS).
Former GEMS members Andrew and Jack Falk formed THE MODERN AGE while attending Florida State University in 1979. The band featured Andy on guitar and Jack on bass. They soon added Conrad Williams as drummer/singer and Roland Bestwina on lead vocals. Soon Williams took over lead singing duties and Mike Gamble took over the drumming chores.

The MODERN AGE embraced the "new wave" sound of the time and played mostly cover gigs featuring copies by THE POLICE, PRETENDERS, JOE JACKSON, THE CLASH, and similar new wave type bands. They also embraced the new metal sounds of Van Halen as well as a nod to the past with covers of Crimson and Clover and Led Zep. The band was a hit on the college frat and club circuit and soon started writing original songs.
The band gained access to the college recording studio and set out to record over 40 original songs over a 2 year period.

The album LIVING IN THE WESTERN WORLD features original MODERN AGE songs that were written between 1979-1983. The songwriting and production are somewhat uneven as A Falk was tasked with engineering the sessions as well as producing. At some point legendary music engineer Angie Tomanelli came on board to take over the engineering, however the low budget analog recording equipment was better suited for voice overs than rock bands. While the recordings capture the energy and excitement of the times, it also captures quite a bit of tape noise. Keep in mind digital technology was about 15 years away from being fully integrated into college recording studios.

Despite all the problems the songs are well represented and the youthful talent of the players and especially the singer is evident in these recordings.
